The Flowing Drill Method
1Self Defense
Every student start their Gracie Jiu Jitsu journey by getting acquainted with the principles of Self Defense.
Those are the core techniques that will enable you to defend and escape from the most common types attacks both standing up and on the ground.2Stand up Techniques
The techniques taught here are practiced without the pressure of strikes, allowing you to focus on movement, balance, and control.
You’ll learn how to fall safely, maintain your balance, and apply takedowns — all in a safe, controlled environment and in full cooperation with a training partner.3Ground Techniques
Working in cooperation with a training partner and without the concern of strikes, you’ll learn the fundamental elements of ground techniques.
These are practiced through structured movement sequences with a clear beginning, middle, and end — typically concluding with a joint lock or choke.4Flowing Drills
Flowing Drills are structured sequences that combine the techniques you’ve learned, practiced in cooperation with a training partner.
Each partner has a defined role, allowing both to develop timing, leverage, and muscle memory in a controlled, supportive setting. These drills dramatically accelerate progress — helping you go from beginner to confident practitioner in record time.
5Free Practice
During Free Practice (offered three times per week),
you’ll engage in flowing drills, observe advanced students in live sparring (“rolling”), and have the opportunity to clarify any questions with instructors.Once you’re fully comfortable with all 12 flowing drills — performing them calmly and with ease — you may be invited by an accredited instructor to begin free sparring.
Participation is entirely optional, and you’re free to accept the invitation when you feel ready.6Advanced Classes
It’s perfectly fine to train exclusively in the Fundamentals program.
However, if you’re interested in pursuing the path toward black belt and beyond, you’ll be invited to join the Advanced classes once you’re ready. This transition happens naturally as you become confident and well-versed in the foundational techniques. For most students, this progression typically takes between 3 to 6 months.
Even after moving on to Advanced training, students continue attending Fundamentals classes to refine their skills and reinforce core concepts.
